New Year’s Interfaith Prayer World Peace

The annual event of the “Interfaith Prayer for World Peace”, sponsored by The Buddhist Association of the United States, will be held on January 1, 2019 at Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel, NY. People with different ethics background will all come together to pray for world peace. Vegetarian lunch is provided after the prayer services. Welcome everyone come to celebrate and to pray for world peace. Chuang Yen Monastery is home to the largest indoor statue of a Buddha in the Western Hemisphere. The name "Chuang Yen" means "Majestically Adorned". Temple buildings include Kuan Yin Hall, the Dining Hall, the Thousand Lotus Memorial Terrace, the Tai Hsu Hall, the Yin Kuang Hall, the Woo Ju Memorial Library and the Great Buddha Hall. The Penn Museum in Philadelphia, PA will host CultureFest: Lunar New Year Celebration. This family-friendly day features traditional Chinese music and dance, contemporary Asian film, tangram workshops, tai chi and kung fu martial arts demonstrations, storytelling, calligraphy, family crafts, a photo contest, and much more—closing with the grand finale drums and the roar of the lion dance and parade. Activities are held in the Museum’s Rotunda, which houses one of the finest collections of monumental Chinese art in the country, and throughout the international galleries of the Museum. The Penn Museum, one of the world’s finest archaeological and anthropological museums, features a million objects including art and artifacts from around the globe. Next, the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments comprises nearly one thousand objects including instruments, accessories and related items, the majority of which document the Western European and American art music traditions. A lunar year is made up of 12 months with 29 and one half days in each month. Every two and a half months an additional month is added creating a lunar leap year. The beginning of each lunar month is marked by the New Moon on a Western calendar. Celebrate Chinese New Year at Kagyu Thubten Chöling Monastery founded in 1978 by Lama Norlha Rinpoche in the tradition of Kyabje Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche. Prayers for long life and auspicious conditions for the New Year include Shangpa Kagyu practices of White Mahakala (Gönkar) and Summoning Abundance (Yang Guk). Tea and ceremonial rice (dresi) will be offered to the assembly during the chanting. We may use a new mini bus for this trip (subject to change).
